Linksys EtherFast® BEFSR41 Router
Linksys EtherFast® BEFSR41 Router

Consumer Rating

Price Range
$40 - $60

Product Description

The Linksys Instant Broadband EtherFast Cable/DSL Router is the perfect option to connect a small group of PCs to a high-speed Broadband Internet connection or to an Ethernet back-bone. Configurable as a DHCP server, the EtherFast Cable/DSL Router acts as the only externally recognized Internet device on your local area network (LAN). The router can also be configured to block internal users' access to the Internet. Unlike a typical router which can only share 100Mbps over all its connections, the Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router is equipped with a blazing 4-port EtherFast Switch, dedicating a breakneck 100Mbps to each and every connected PC.

Summary

As soon as I ordered my new G4 iMac, I knew I wanted to get a router and network it with my G3 Blue and White Mac. Truthfully, I'd never actually seen a router and didn't really understand how they worked, but I knew I wanted access to our AppleTalk...

Strength

No hub or switch needed, 4 LAN ports

Weakness

Zero guidelines for Macintosh installation

Bottom Line

If you can get past the lack of guidance for Macs, this is a wonderful router for networking your computers and connecting to the Internet through one IP address.

Summary

My friend Nate is a techno-junkie. He's pushing 85 this year. That's both in age and the number of toys he has plugged in at his home. He won't be happy until he has a telephone and a speakerphone in every room. When he hangs up a phone, they all...

Strength

A joy to install! Easy on the pocket book, but versatile and very reliable.

Weakness

No onscreen warning when DSL connection fails. Firewall/antivirus is built in, but an extra expense.

Bottom Line

A great, inexpensive router for the home LAN. It lacks some features of more expensive models, but as far as I'm concerned, it's the best bang for the buck.

Strength

Easy setup. Firewall with NAT, port forwarding.
