Summary

I use Vuescan and there was no need to install anything. But I have nothing to say about Nikonscan. Scan time was fast with USB 2.0 and very quiet. Color, brightness and contrast were right on the spot with Vuescan v8 beta 3. I have not yet tested it with earlier versions of Vuescan. LS-50 produced only very slightly sharper image than LS-40 but of course the images can be enlarged bigger because of the higher resolution. I have not yet pushed the limit on the dynamic range since I shot almost exclusively negatives. If you have a LS-40, you probably don't need to upgrade. LS-40 was significantly better than LS-30.

Strength

4000 dpi price USB 2.0 construction low noise fast

Summary

The scanner is pretty good, fast, and has really high resolution. I was able to batch scan many rolls of film with ease. The only thing that bothered me about it was using the digital ice4 tools. Digital ICE itself was nice, GEM was ok, but the DEE and ROC just suck. Maybe the ROC is good for old film, but on new film it can cause bad things--besides, if you're good at color correction just use photoshop and leave this off. As for the DEE, it's just awful. I don't know what they were thinking. I would rather just boost the shadows using a curve than end up with the speckeled crap in shadows that the DEE creates. If you get this scanner just leave those features off, otherwise you'll kick yourself later when you finally notice the "hot pixels". Occasionally my computer did lock up while scanning, but that might just be a computer issue. There's also random software issue is sometimes the program will close photoshop when the twain program is closed, with no prompt to save what you just scanned or anything else you had open. So be careful with that (I saw this bug on 2 different computers, both Win2k).

Strength

High resolution Good color Fast scanning Batch scanning is nice

Weakness

Digital DEE and ROC is crap! Software has some bugs
